MBC's The Secret Friends Club has managed to do something rare in 2026. It has made the simple act of gift-giving feel like a high-stakes spy thriller.
Having had the privilege to recently watch the 9 episodes that have been released so far, here are our thoughts on The Secret Friends Club and why it should be on your to-watch list in 2026.
The Premise: The Secret Act of Gift-Giving
The premise of The Secret Friends Club is deceptively simple: celebrities are paired as "Manitos" (a secret gift-giving partner) and must deliver thoughtful gifts or perform acts of kindness without being caught. However, under the direction of Producer Kim Tae-ho (Infinite Challenge, My Name is Gabriel, and Wish Cat), things don't nearly go as planned.
With a set of revolving cast members, the tone, the games, the acts, and the hilarious psychological warfare are getting unique and weirder. Without further ado, here's what we think about the different cast members and why the reality TV show gets better with each episode.
Set 1: The "Hype" Pioneers (Episodes 1–3)
Cast: Jennie (BLACKPINK), Dex, Choo Sung-hoon, Ro Hong-chul, and Lee Suji.
The first cast of The Secret Friends Club was built on pure star power. Although the chemistry between Jennie and Dex was the initial draw, the show wisely focused on their individual "spy" skills. Ro Hong-chul brought his signature loudmouth energy, which was a perfect anti-dynamic to the stoic (and often confused) Choo Sung-hoon.
The standout moment was undoubtedly Dex frantically fleeing from Choo Sung-hoon to avoid being identified and Jennie's meticulous planning. While the ratings for their set were slightly lower than expected, the viral clip of Jennie choosing snacks for Dex gave the show its first major social media win.
Set 2: The Veterans (Episodes 4–7)
Cast: Jung Hae-in, Go Younjung, Park Myung Soo, Hong Jin-kyung, Kim Do-hoon, and Chef Yoon Namno.
The second rotation shifted the dynamic from "cool" to "hilarious". By adding variety legends like Park Myung Soo and Hong Jin-kyung, the show gained the comedic tension that seemed somewhat missing from the first set. Although Jung Hae-in and Go Younjung provided the visual appeal, it was Kim Do-hoon's rising-star wit that actually stole the show.
Even critics agreed that this set felt more grounded and emotionally resonant, successfully bridging the gap between a competitive variety show and a heartfelt documentary.
Set 3: The Chemistry Masters (Episodes 8 – Present)
Cast: Cha Tae-hyun, Park Bo-young, Lee Sun-bin, Hwang Kwang-hee, and Kang Hoon.
Currently in the middle of rotation, we came across what is arguably the most chaotic-good lineup yet. The long-standing friendship between Cha Tae-hyun and Park Bo-young was a welcome sight, while Kwang-hee and Lee Sun-bin brought life to this party.
The game of Hide and Seek Delivery evolved in Episode 9 as the cast played a literal game of hide-and-seek in public spaces. The set is a masterclass in variety timing. Cha Tae-hyun famously brought his real-life daughter along as a shield, assuming no one would suspect a dad out for a stroll.
On the other hand, Park Bo-young's assessment of his laziness was spot on, yet it worked! The most viral moment, however, was Lee Sun-bin attempting to use a heart gesture to signal her Manito, Kwang-hee, which nearly blew her cover immediately. Kang Hoon continues to be the dark horse, using his unpredictable wit to stay one step ahead of the others.
The Secret Friends Club: Should You Stream It or Skip It?
We can officially say that The Secret Friends Club has successfully transitioned from a simple game show to a social experiment in kindness. The concept is unique (although traditional), but presented in a hilarious and chaotic manner. The 3rd set is currently delivering the highest laugh-per-minute ratio (based on our humor and math), primarily because they are all so comfortable with each other that the "secrecy" is being undermined by their natural banter.
"The Secret Friends Club teaches us that a simple act of gift-giving is a deeply rooted tradition that resonates not just in Korea, but around the world."
Therefore, The Secret Friends Club is easily one of the best streaming shows that you should definitely add to your 2026 watchlist right now. From the humbleness of people to the mere act of gift-giving, to the plethora of familiar faces, The Secret Friends Club actually teaches us that a simple act of gift-giving is a deeply rooted tradition that not only resonates with the people of Korea, but to the people around the world.
