The Midnight Romance in Hagwon: A Love Story That Refuses to Rush

Midnight romance often brings back memories of candlelit dinners, dancing in the rain, or at least one person running through an airport. However, The Midnight Romance in Hagwon has exactly none of that. What it does have, however, is something a lot harder to pull off: two people who are genuinely complicated, in a situation that is genuinely messy, falling for each other in a way that feels truly real. And honestly? That's so much better.

So What's the Show Actually About?

It all starts with Seo Hye-jin (portrayed by Jung Ryeo-won), who is a Korean language instructor at a Hagwon — an intense private after-school academy. Having spent around 14 years in Daechi-dong, she's built a reputation as one of the best in her field. On a more personal basis, however, Seo Hye-jin is lost. The kind of loss that 14 years of burying yourself in work tends to produce.

In walks Lee Joon-ho (Wi Ha-joon), a former student of Seo Hye-jin. She helped him get into a prestigious university and shaped who he became. After disappearing into a corporate career for a decade, he suddenly returns.

Coming back to the same academy as a rookie instructor, Lee Joon-ho isn't back for the job. He has been in love with Hye-jin ever since he was her student — and he came back for her, specifically.

The Slow Burn Is the Point

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon — slow burn

Here's an honest heads-up though: The Midnight Romance in Hagwon is a slow, slice-of-life drama. It's directed by Director Ahn Pan-seok, who also did Something in the Rain and One Spring Night, and has zero interest in manufactured drama. Rather, he lets the journey flow naturally.

There are no dramatic plot twists, no third-party love rivals, no big misunderstandings — and honestly? That's much better. The decision was kept deliberate since the chemistry between Wi Ha-joon and Jung Ryeo-won is simply exceptional. It's so good to see two people falling in love naturally rather than under forced circumstances.

The Hagwon World Is Fascinating, and Nobody Warned Me

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon — Hagwon world

This is the part the title doesn't really prepare you for. The Midnight Romance in Hagwon is substantially a show about South Korea's private education system. The politics of the academy, the pressure on instructors to produce results, the quiet tragedy of teaching literature and language to students who only care about exam scores — it's all in there, and it's all treated seriously.

Think of it as the K-drama equivalent of a workplace drama that just happens to be a love story. If you find that interesting, the show rewards you enormously. If you're purely here for the romance, be prepared to meet it halfway.

Wi Ha-joon and Jung Ryeo-won Are Doing Something Special Here

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon — Wi Ha-joon and Jung Ryeo-won

Fans might know Wi Ha-joon from Gyeongseong Creature or Squid Games. He's usually an intense, high-stakes actor who carries a lot of dramatic weight. However, here he plays Joon-ho with a completely different energy. It's almost warm, unhurried, and quietly devoted. There's a softness to the performance that makes it impossible not to root for him. He doesn't push; he just shows up and lets Hye-jin come to her own conclusions at her own pace.

It is the most romantic thing in the show — and barely registers as a grand gesture.

Jung Ryeo-won, on the other hand, is carrying the heavier emotional lift. Hye-jin is not an easy character to play: she's guarded without being cold, accomplished without being arrogant, and vulnerable in ways she would never voluntarily admit. Jung Ryeo-won handles all of it without ever tipping into melodrama. When the walls finally start coming down, you feel every bit of it.

Their chemistry doesn't hit you all at once. It accumulates — just like the show. By the midpoint, you realize you've been completely invested without quite knowing when it happened. That is what skilled filmmaking is all about.

"The Midnight Romance in Hagwon is a show you put on when you want to feel, slowly and thoroughly, like you're watching something true."

Should You Watch It?

Definitely yes. However, you should be aware of what you are signing up for. This is not a show you put on when you want to be swept off your feet. It's a show you put on when you want to feel, slowly and thoroughly, like you're watching something true. It's the kind of drama that makes you think about it after you've turned it off.

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon is a time capsule of quiet feelings and slow-building warmth. It's honest and a little unhurried, but always engaging. That's something that never really goes out of style.
